In the Italian educational system, a Diploma is a 5 years course with final exams at the end of the 5th year. The first 2 years are comparable to GCSEs and the following 3 years are similar to A levels plus a foundation university course.

The overall final grade is based on the exam outcomes (which are not released) combined with the results obtained in each academic year. Personal research on a chosen subject is also required and assessed. The exam panels are made up of external examiners and teachers within the school.
